Regional Rapid Transit System: Delhi-Meerut Corridor

Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)

In 2005, the Planning Commission formed a task force under the Chairmanship of the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) in order to develop a transit system for Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). It was included in the Integrated Transport Plan for NCR with emphasis on Regional Rapid Transit System.

This system will link regional centres in the NCR. The task force identified eight corridors and prioritized three corridors for phase 1 implementation:

  • Delhi-Meerut
  • Delhi- Alwar
  • Delhi- Panipat
What is RRTS?

RRTS is a rail-based, high frequency and high-speed transit system. It is aimed at bringing people and places closer in NCR.

What is RRTS?

RRTS is a rail-based system. It is designed with a speed of 180 kilometres per hour and an average speed of 100 Km per hour. The RRTS system will provide fast, safe, reliable and efficient transport solutions. It will connect the national capital to the centres of Ghaziabad, Modinagar, Muradnagar and Meerut. It will encourage development in the NCR and improve the quality of life of the people.

Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor

  • The length of the RRTS corridor is 82.15 kilometres. Out of this, 70 km will be an elevated path and 12 km will be underground.
  • The full corridor from Delhi to Meerut is expected to get ready by 2025.
  • The completion cost of the corridor is Rs 30,274 crore.
  • Throughout the RRTS corridor, there will be 25 stations including two depot stations at Modipuram and Duhai.
  • An Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system will be adopted.
  • Currently, the train sets are under production at the Savli plant in Gujarat. 40 trainsets will be manufactured.
  • To design indigenous Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), NCRTC (National Capital Region Transport Corporation) has partnered with BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited). These doors will be used at RRTS stations for the safety of passengers.

Features for passengers

  • The coaches will have 2 x 2 seats.
  • The coaches will have grab handles, overhead luggage racks, mobile and laptop charging sockets. and onboard Wi-Fi.
  • The RRTS coaches will be equipped with public announcements and display system and dynamic route map display.
  • RRTS trains and stations are designed to provide easy access to people on stretchers in case of medical emergencies.
  • CCTV cameras, fire extinguishers and door indicators will also be installed.
  • To provide a smooth ride to the passengers, trains will run under Automatic Train Operation.
  • On every train, one coach will be reserved for women passengers.
