Rescue operations underway after earthquake hits Haiti

Recommended for Middle Grades

On Saturday (14 August), a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. This is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea.

What is the magnitude of an earthquake?

The magnitude is the size of an earthquake. It is measured using the Richter scale, one being the mildest and 10 being the most severe.

The epicentre of the quake was about 125 kilometres west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The strong earthquake turned thousands of structures into dust. At least 5,700 people have been injured while around 30,000 families have been left homeless. Healthcare centres in the country have run out of space and are finding it hard to treat the injured. Sadly, over 1000 people have died too.

Residents also felt several aftershocks, days after the earthquake. Experts have warned that intensive aftershocks are to be expected for a month.

The Haitian government declared a state of emergency for a month in response to the disaster. Haiti has been hit by earthquakes before too, including a devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake in 2010.

Incoming storm

Moreover, Haiti’s woes are still not over. Experts say conditions will get worse as a storm, Tropical Depression Grace, is also predicted to hit the country. It could bring strong winds, heavy rain, mudslides and flash flooding. earthquake
