Space bricks for human space civilisations!
Recommended for Middle Grades
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru partnered to build space bricks. The teams utilised a new process that offers a unique method of building bricks for future space civilisations on Mars and the Moon.
Unique process to build space bricks!
- When it comes to Martian soil, researchers used a typical substance called Mars soil simulant. They purchased the Mars soil simulant from the United States. Further, ISRO created a lunar soil simulant to represent the moon’s soil.
- The bricks were made by mixing soil, glue and other materials. The ingredients are mixed together and poured into moulds of any shape.
- Using a novel technique, IISc claims that it could minimise brick openness by binding bacteria and mineralized proteins in the gaps of the bricks.
- In addition, biomaterials made by these microbes then hold the soil together.
Testing of Space Bricks!
Scientists have yet to figure out whether the “space bricks” would work 100% on the red planet. The reason is that martian soil is a lot more toxic and the atmosphere is 100 times thinner than Earth’s.
Indian scientists have created a lab-on-a-chip device that aims to measure bacterial activity in microgravity conditions. These devices will soon be sent into space with ISRO’s help to study bacterial growth in low gravity.
The scientists are planning to investigate the effect of the Martian atmosphere and low gravity on the durability of the ‘space bricks’.
