Space junk can create unknown and unrecognised risks.
What is space junk?
Space junk is any piece of machinery left by humans in space. It is also known as space debris.
Dan Ceperley, the founder and CEO of Leolabs, said that the amount of junk floating in Earth’s orbit will create an unrecognised risk.
Risks from space junk
It consists of hundreds of thousands of pieces of old satellites, missiles and rockets. All of these have the potential to trigger a collision in Earth’s orbit.
All of these pieces are left by the activities that humans make in space. These pieces of rockets and satellites have been in space for a long time, decades, to be precise.
