Superconductivity at room temperature: IISc team provides video evidenceA 10-member research team at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), led by Prof. Anshu Pandey, claims to have achieved superconductivity at an ambient temperature* of 286 K (13°C).

Prof. T.V Ramakrishnan, leading condensed matter physicist said that “If the result is correct, it would be the greatest work done in India since the discovery of Raman effect”.

How and where was the study conducted?

The study was conducted in IISc’s Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit.
 	The study was conducted on silver and gold nano particles.

What are superconductors?

A superconductor is a material capable of conducting electricity with zero resistance. This phenomenon is called superconductivity.
 	Superconductors can be used to build highly energy efficient devices.

What is the importance of this scientific breakthrough?

Till now, scientists were able to make superconducting materials only at temperatures much below 0°C.
 	This makes regular superconductors not just expensive, but also impractical and essentially useless for use on a larger scale.
 	As scientists have been working on this without getting desired results for over a century. This discovery is groundbreaking.

*Ambient temperature: This is the air temperature of an environment or object (Room temperature).
