The United States Open Tennis Championships (US Open) is a hard court tennis tournament. It is the modern version of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the U.S. National Championship.
Where is the US Open held?
The tournament is held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City.
Since 1987, the US Open has been the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. The other three, are the Australian Open, French Open, & Wimbledon. The tournament usually starts on the last Monday of August and continues for two weeks.
The tournament consists of five categories: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. It also includes events for senior, junior, and wheelchair players.
2021 US Open
This year is the 141st edition of the tournament. It started on 24 August and will end on 12 September 2021.
The men’s and women’s singles defending champions this year were Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka respectively. However, Thiem withdrew from the 2021 tournament due to a wrist injury.
Spectators are allowed to watch. But must show a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination in order to enter the grounds.
At the tournament, Novak Djokovic and Osaka are through to the 3rd round. If Djokovic wins this tournament, he will achieve a Calendar-year Grand Slam. This is someone who wins all the four Grand Slams in the same year. Djokovic has already won the other 3 and only the US Open is left.
