The first Olympic race was won by a chef

The first Olympic race was won by a chefA chef named Coroebus (or Koroibos) of Elis won the first-ever race in the first recorded ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. Coroebos was a chef and athlete from Elis in Greece.

According to the earliest records, they held only one athletic event in the first Olympics. It was a footrace of about 183 metres or the length of the stadium which Coroebus won.

The first few Olympics had only limited local appeal and they had one race on one day. Also, only men could compete in or attend the event.

The international sports festival Olympic Games began in ancient Greece. They staged the original Greek games every fourth year for several hundred years but they stopped.

The modern Olympic Games started in 1896. And since then, they have happened every four years, except during World War I and World War II (1916, 1940, and 1944). The COVID-19 pandemic also postponed the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Perhaps the basic difference between the ancient and modern Olympics Games is that the former was the ancient Greeks' way of saluting their gods. However, the modern Olympics Games salute the athletic talents of citizens of all nations.

Moreover, the ancient Olympics featured competition in music, oratory, and theatre performances too. The modern Olympic Games do not have those. Instead they include more different types of sports and the events last for 2 and half weeks. In a way, the modern Olympics has tried to replace international conflict with friendly competition. But, it has not always been successful.
