The tyrannosaurus rex was a very slow walker
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) is one of the most famous dinosaurs that we know today. It has been seen in movies like Jurassic Park.
This dinosaur was known to be the biggest of all carnivorous dinosaurs ((meat-eating animal). It lived in what is now the US and Canada, from about 66 million to 68 million years ago.
Tyrannosaurus rex was a scary animal for sure. But don’t worry, even if you were alive then, you would have been able to run from it.
A new study says that the T.rex moved so slowly that you could have even out-walked it! Its speed was under 5 km an hour – this is a speed that humans can easily walk as well.
What does the study say?
This new discovery is based on a computer programme that simulates (copies) its tail movement. Earlier studies had not paid close attention to the role of the T.rex’s tail. Its tail was huge, more than half its body length.
Surely this was good news for smaller animals in those days since a new study says that billions of them used to roam on Earth.
Dinosaurs lived hundreds of million years ago. But even today, they remain very popular in our collective imagination. We keep finding out new fascinating things about them and how they lived their lives. However, like animals today, there were many many different types of dinosaurs. Some were as small as hummingbirds while some were as huge as whales today. So, keep coming along with us at Curious Times as we go on a journey to find out more about these amazing ancient animals.
