The UK hosts this year’s G7 summit

The UK hosts this year’s G7 summitThe 47th G7 summit was held from 11 to 13 June 2021 in Cornwall in the United Kingdom.

The G7 summit is an annual meeting of the 7 countries considered to be the largest ‘advanced’ economies in the world. The summit has been held since 1975. And the 7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US.

Additionally, the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council attend the summit too. Some other selected countries are also invited to participate. For example, PM Modi took part virtually in two sessions of the summit. South Korea, Australia, and South Africa also participated in the summit this year.

Last year's G7 summit was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The US was supposed to host it.

This year, the summit ended with leaders promising to take steps to vaccinate the world against COVID-19. They also discussed making big corporations pay their fair share of taxes as well as steps to fight climate change.

British PM Boris Johnson declared that the G7 countries would provide at least 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses. Half of this would come from the US and 100 million from the UK.

The G7 summit also announced the "Build Back Better for the World" plan. This plan will offer money to poorer countries to build infrastructures like roads, railways and wind farms.

While some issues remain unresolved, the summit overall showed a positive message of cooperation.
