The United Nations COP26 climate summit is set to begin
Recommended for Secondary Grades
The United Nations COP26 climate summit is set to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 31 October to 12 November 2021. COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. It is also known as the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. This is the biggest and most important climate-related conference on the planet.
This time, the climate summit is under the co-presidency of the United Kingdom and Italy. The last UN climate summit (COP25) was held in 2019 in Spain. This is the 26th UN climate summit since nations signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Goals of the COP26 climate summit
At COP26, nations will be aiming to finalise the ‘Paris Rulebook’. These are the rules needed to implement the Paris Agreement.
What is the Paris Agreement?
The Paris Agreement is an international agreement to combat climate change which has 3 main objectives. It was signed at COP21 in Paris, on 12 December 2015. The agreement is widely recognized as a historic deal to fight against global warming.
COP26 is extremely important as climate change has become a life-threatening global emergency. So, leaders at COP26 will need to agree on bold, urgent plans for important goals. The goals include limiting global warming to 1.5 °C, investing in renewable sources of energy and providing US$100 billion to poor countries to fight climate change.
Who will be attending?
The leaders of many countries including the UK and US as well as India’s PM Modi are attending. Other attendees include climate change activist Greta Thunberg, singer Ellie Goulding and K-pop superstars Blackpink.
