Green energy: Kites generate wind power by flying in the air
Recommended for Middle Grades
A German technology company called KiteKraft is using the lightness of kites to produce green energy. This means the energy doesn’t cause pollution.
These kite-like planes produce wind energy, similar to how wind farms do it. However, they have shrunk the system into much smaller kites.
So, KiteKraft’s system uses much less material and costs much lesser than traditional wind turbines. Being much smaller, it also does not disturb the scenery (unlike huge wind farms).
Recently, the engineers working on the project tested it out in a field near Munich, Germany.
The kites that produce green energy
As the kite flies by itself, driven by the wind, it generates energy which is sent down a thin tether (string) back to the ground. It also has sensors and cameras on board. So, people on the ground can see live videos from the kites.
The technology is suitable for places that get hurricanes a lot. If there is any danger, they can easily lower the kite to the ground for safety.
The company’s aim is not to compete with huge wind farms. Instead, they want to provide small green energy networks, which are normally powered by diesel generators and/or solar energy.
