This fish loses 20 teeth every day but still has over 500
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
The Pacific lingcod fish is one of nature’s many unusual creations. This fish lives in the north Pacific ocean and can grow as tall as a human (up to 1.5 metres). What makes it “weird” is the fact that it has a lot of teeth – 555 to be exact!
A new study says that its 555 teeth are not the most unusual thing about this fish. Not only does it have so many teeth, but it loses and grows 20 teeth every single day! And unlike humans, these teeth are sharp but really small and fill their entire mouth.
Having many teeth is not very rare for a bony fish like the Pacific lingcod. It is also useful for scientists because it helps them study the fish. Teeth fossilize well and so, a lot of what we know about ancient animals comes from studying their teeth. Teeth tell us about what an animal ate and so, what it might have looked like too.
Scientists kept finding the Pacific lingcod’s teeth but they didn’t know how many the fish lost in one day. But after an experiment, they found the number.
