Tokyo Olympics

India bagged its third medal today – a bronze medal in boxing. Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won a bronze medal in the semi-final of the women’s welterweight division (64 – 69kg). Lovlina became the third Indian boxer to win a bronze medal at the Olympics.

Indian wrestlers also had a good day at the Tokyo Olympics. Deepak Punia reached the semi-finals of men’s 86kg freestyle while Ravi Kumar won the semi-finals. He defeated Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhastan and raised India’s hope for another medal.  Moreover, India’s Neeraj Chopra also qualified for the men’s javelin throw final.

Indian men and women hockey teams played in the semi-finals of hockey. Indian men hockey team lost the match but will be playing for the bronze medal now. Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha sponsored both Indian men and women hockey teams.

India faced a loss in shot put as Tajinderpal Singh Toor failed to qualify for men’s shot put. Adding to it, Indian javelin thrower, Annu Rani failed to qualify for the finals.

World Medal Tally

China is still on top with 32 gold medals while the US is second with 24 gold medals. Japan is in third position with 20 gold medals. India is at the 64th position at the Tokyo Olympics.

Skateboarder Kokona Hiraki became the youngest Japanese medalist since 1936, winning bronze in skateboarding. She won it at the age of 12 years and 343 days. This is also the first time that skateboarding is an event at the Olympics.
