UAE adopts largest legal reform in its 50-year history

Recommended for Secondary Grades

In a move to develop its legislative system, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has adopted the largest legislative reform in its history.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE has approved these reforms. They consist of more than 40 laws.

The laws aim to strengthen economic and commercial opportunities, enhance social stability, and ensure the rights of individuals, as well as institutions. They include laws to develop the legislative structure, laws regarding crime and punishment and as well as the making, sale and use of drugs. Moreover, they are also designed to better protect women and domestic workers.

These laws have come as the UAE celebrates 50 years of its founding. The UAE celebrates its national day on 2 December each year.

What are some of the new provisions?

The law aims to provide protection to children whose parents are not married.

It aims to fight online crimes, stop the spread of fake news and preserve personal privacy and rights.

Moreover, the new law also prohibits the drinking of alcohol in a public place or in unlicensed locations. People under the age of 21 also cannot drink alcohol.

The new legislation will come into power on 2 January 2022.
