UAE to host next FIFA Club World Cup football competition

The UAE (United Arab Emirates) is currently one of the hosts for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After this, in 2022, it will host another big sports tournament, the FIFA Club World Cup

What is the FIFA Club World Cup?

The FIFA Club World Cup is an international men’s association football competition organised by FIFA, football’s global governing body. This tournament involves seven teams. They are the winners of that year’s club champions of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania and Europe, along with the host nation’s national champions.

The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup was supposed to be played at the end of this year in Japan. But it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Now, it will be held in the UAE in February 2022.

Spanish club Real Madrid hold the record for most victories, winning the competition four times. Moreover,  teams from Spain have won the tournament seven times, the most for any nation. The champions last time were Germany’s Bayern Munich.

The Middle East and football

Many companies and governments from the Middle East are getting heavily involved in football today. Qatar is hosting the next FIFA World Cup in 2022, while the Qatar Investment Authority owns French football club Paris Saint-Germain. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family of the UAE also purchased English club Manchester City in 2008,

Moreover, the latest big news is the purchase of English football club Newcastle United by a group led by the Saudi Arabian government’s sovereign wealth fund.
