UNESCO names the city of Babylon as a World Heritage Site

UNESCO names the city of Babylon as a World Heritage SiteThe ancient city of Babylon has been declared a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site. Babylon is in Iraq.

Iraq had been working since 1983 for the site to be added to the UN's World Heritage Site list.
 	The 'World Heritage Site' name is awarded to areas or landmarks considered important for the whole of humanity and protected by international treaties.
 	The Iraqi delegation welcomed the designation, seeing it as a recognition of the significance of Babylon and the Mesopotamian civilisation.

The city was famous for its Hanging Gardens, which were among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Urgent need for protection

The UN World Heritage Committee warns that the site is in an "extremely vulnerable condition" and in need of urgent conservation.
 	Military conflict has caused a lot of damage to the city.

Hopefully, now there will be better conservation of this historically important city.
Some other new World Heritage Sites include the Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland and Paraty and Ilha Grande, Brazil and Jaipur city, India.
