Recommended for Foundational Grades
Have you ever read about a plant that is also called a “sheep”? Well, today, let’s read about the species of cushion plant called the vegetable sheep!
Fun facts about Vegetable sheep!
- The name “vegetable sheep” comes from the fact that the huge shrubs of this plant resemble white sheep grazing on mountain slopes.
- This plant is covered in a multitude of tiny leaves that are extremely fuzzy and packed as densely as they can be.
- There are several different species that make up this plant, however, they are all classified under the Raoulia family.
- The plant is found in dry, rocky alpine areas in the North and South islands of New Zealand.
- Despite appearances, the plant is hard to touch. The ‘woolly’ leaves, stems etc are all pressed into a dense, hard mass.
- This is a trait developed by the plant to prevent water from being lost and survive in the harsh conditions of the areas they grow in.
