United Nations report says Great Barrier Reef is in ‘danger’

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the world’s largest coral reef system. Coral reefs are large underwater structures made of the skeletons of marine creatures called coral.

It is a natural World Heritage Site and is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. However, as we have read before, the Great Barrier Reef is facing a lot of dangers due to climate change.

Recently, a report by UNESCO says that the reef should be put on a list of World Heritage Sites that are “in danger”. This is due to the damage it has suffered due to climate change. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

What does the report say?

The report says that the Australian government has not done enough to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

If the reef is put on the “in danger” list, then it will be the first time a natural World Heritage Site has been placed on the list due to climate change. It will also affect tourism in Australia.

However, the Australian government has objected to the report. Previously too, UNESCO and Australia have had conflicts over the same topic. And Australia agreed to improve. But mass coral bleaching continues.

Moreover, scientists and global leaders also say that Australia is not doing enough to fight climate change.
