The US military has completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan today. The withdrawal ends a long 20-year war that has been happening since 2001.

US General Kenneth McKenzie told reporters that he is announcing the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate American citizens. The final flight left at 7:29 pm GMT Monday (just before the start of Tuesday in Kabul). More than 122,000 people have been airlifted out of Kabul since 14 August 2021.

The withdrawal ends America's longest war to date. Its military leaders said that the US military disabled many aircraft and armoured vehicles as well as a high-tech rocket defence system at the Kabul airport before it left.

The Taliban is now in full control of the country. Taliban members joyously fired guns into the air and celebrated the US withdrawal.
Challenges
However, the Taliban now also faces a number of challenges, not the least of all, reviving a failing economy. Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. The United Nations has also warned that it faces a catastrophic humanitarian situation.
