US state working on road that charges electric car
Recommended for Secondary Grades
Imagine a road that charges your electric car as you drive on it.
The state of Indiana in the US is planning to create such roads. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has decided to help with the charging of electric cars by using electrified wire coils. These wire coils will be buried inside the roads and they will create a magnetic field along the road surface. This is similar to the way we use wireless charging stations for tablets and phones.
In order to use the roads, the electric car would also be fitted with a receiver coil to pick up the charge as they drive.
Indiana has contracted a German company called Magment to design and install the technology. This will be the first such electrified charging road in the US.
Other countries
As of now, Sweden has similar electric rails on their highways that allow the large electric cars (vehicles) on the highway to charge from the railings.
Moreover, car company Volkswagen and an Israeli firm called Electreon are also trying out a similar technology on a road between the Italian cities of Brescia and Milan.
