Vande Mataram – the National Song of IndiaEveryone knows that the national anthem of India is 'Jana-gana-mana'.

But did you also know that our national song is 'Vande Mataram'?

It was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (Chottopadhyaya). It is a poem taken from his novel 'Anandamath'.

The meaning of "Vande Mataram" is "I bow to thee, Mother".
 	It was originally written in Bengali and Sanskrit and translated later into other languages.
 	Jadunath Bhattacharya composed the music to it. It was first sung by Rabindranath Tagore in an Indian National Congress session held in 1896.
 	'Vande Mataram' played a vital role in uniting people during the freedom movement in India.
 	The most popular modern version of this song is the one composed by A. R. Rahman in 1997, on the occasion of the 50th Independence anniversary of India.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on 27th June 1838 in West Bengal. It was his 181st birth anniversary on 27th June.
