The Kilauea volcano is an active shield volcano in Hawaii, US. A shield volcano is a broad domed volcano with gently sloping sides. This volcano is between 210,000 and 280,000 years old.

Recently, in December 2020, the Kilauea volcano started erupting again. The eruption created a deep lava lake inside the volcano’s crater (called Halema’uma’u).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has shared an amazing video of a lava dome fountain that formed in the lava lake. It is called a ‘lava dome’ because it looks similar to a bubbling water fountain. The dangerous fountain is about 5 metres tall and 10 metres wide.

For now, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (where the Kilauea volcano is located) is open. And visitors can view the eruption from far. But officials are on high alert.
