Weather: Australia faces worst floods in 50 years

Recommended for Middle Grades

Weather

It has been raining for many days intensely in parts of Australia. The rains have led to widespread flooding.

The coastal areas of the country’s most populous state, New South Wales, have been the most affected. Neighbouring regions are also being affected. Officials say that these are likely to be the biggest floods in decades.

Around 18,000 people have been evacuated (moved to safety) till now and more than 200 schools closed. Soldiers have been deployed as the government warned the floods were extremely dangerous.

Not only humans but animals have also been spotted trying to escape the floods. Spiders have been seen swarming near houses to get away from the water. Many farm animals have also been rescued.

Weather

Currently, 10 million people are under flood warnings in every state and territory except Western Australia. The floods come just a year after wildfires had burned across the same region.

Experts say that such extreme weather conditions are happening more often due to climate change.
