Weather: Europe warned to prepare for record temperatures

Weather

Recently, on Wednesday, a place called Siracusa in Sicily, Italy recorded a temperature of 48.8°C. This is the country’s “highest-ever temperature”. This temperature also breaks the previous European record of 48.0°C in Athens, Greece in 1977. As heat scorches the country, Italian firefighters are battling many wildfires too.

Experts warn that Europe should also be prepared for record temperatures. They say that temperatures could exceed 50.0 degrees Celsius. This is unusual for Europe where such high temperatures are not common.

Last year, we also read about heatwaves in France and other parts of Europe.

Climate change and the weather

Experts say that climate change is making heat-related extremes of weather more intense. So, temperatures are expected to continue to rise. Experts have also singled out the Mediterranean region as a “climate change hotspot”.

The earth’s average surface temperature has risen by around 1.1 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial period (1850-1900). Moreover, some regions have recorded ever higher temperature rises. For example. the average temperature in North Africa has increased by around 2.0 Degrees Celsius over the same period.

A recent study has also said that heatwaves are more likely because of climate change today.
