What’s in a word – Jeans!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Do you like wearing jeans? This fashionable piece of clothing is made from denim fabric (which is itself made of cotton).

Fun facts about Jeans!

  • Jeans are often seen as very “American”. It is often believed to have been invented by Americans Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss. Levi Strauss is the founder of one of the most famous jean brands in the world – Levi’s.
  • However, the word “jeans” is actually believed to have come from Europe.
  • The denim cloth that Levi Strauss used for his famous jeans was first produced in Genoa, Italy and Nimes, France.
  • The French word for Genoa is “Gênes”, which is similar to “jeans”. Similarly, the word “denim” is believed to have come from “de Nimes”, meaning “from Nimes” in French.
  • Denim is a fabric that is quite rough and strong. Workers often wear it as it does not tear or get old easily. So, even before Levi Strauss made it famous, jeans were being worn over a hundred years earlier in Northern Italy.
