Women fighter pilots are a permanent commission in the Air Force.
It was an experiment to send women fighter pilots into the Airforce. Now, it has become a permanent feature. The Ministry of Defence has decided to have more women pilots in the Air Force. It means that there will be more women pilots flying the fighter jets.
Introduction of Women Fighter Pilots
The decision of enforcing more women pilots is PM Modi’s commitment towards women empowerment. On the Republic Day parade, the first Rafale fighter jet pilot Shivangi Singh was seen on the IAF Tableau.
What is IAF Tableau?
The IAF tableau is based on the theme of Indian Air Force transforming for the future.
The experiment to establish women fighter pilots began in 2016. Initially, there were three women pilots in the first batch. Currently, the number of women pilots has increased to 16. These women pilots fly the fighter jets like Rafale, Su30 MKI and MiG 21 Bison.
Earlier, the fighter jet pilots in the Air Force were only men, but in 2015, the entry for women was opened.
Now, the army has opened the aviation branch to women. Navy Force has also boarded women officers in the warships. This is a proud moment for Indian women.
Women in the Armed Forces
The Indian Army has promoted five women to the rank of Colonel who complete service of 26 years. It is the first time that women have reached the rank of Colonel outside of the branches like the Army Medical Corps(AMC) and Army Education Corps(AEC).
Women are also being taken in as soldiers in Assam Rifles and Military Police Corporation. Indian Army has granted a permanent commission to 577 women officers. Though the women cannot serve in combat wings of the army.
