World Chocolate Day!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

World Chocolate Day, also known as International Chocolate Day or simply Chocolate Day, is an annual celebration of chocolate that takes place all over the world on July 7. Some people believe that this date marks the anniversary of the first time chocolate was brought to Europe in 1550.

Chocolate is one of the most beloved foods in the world. Most people love chocolates, especially in the form of sweets, such as cake, ice cream and of course, chocolate bars.

So, today is a day to celebrate this amazing food. Chocolate is made from roasted and ground cacao seeds of the cacao or cocoa tree.

Fun facts about the history of World Chocolate Day!

  • Experts believe that people started using chocolate as medicine and in holy rituals thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica.
  • Mesoamerica is where Mexico is situated today. Ancient people like the Mayans and Aztecs also used it in drinks and considered it a gift from the gods.
  • Then, the Spanish brought chocolate to Europe from the Aztecs in the 16th century.
  • There, they started adding sugar to it as chocolate is naturally bitter.
  • It became very popular among rich people. Then in the 1800s, the invention of the chocolate press made it popular among common people too.
  • Today, West African countries, particularly Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, are the leading producers of cocoa.
