More than 120 world leaders, including PM Modi, are arriving in Glasgow, Scotland for the United Nations’ COP26 climate summit.
COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. It is also known as the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. It is being held from 31 October to 12 November 2021. This is the biggest and most important climate-related conference on the planet.
Before this, PM Modi attended a two-day G20 summit in Italy. There the leaders of the world’s top 20 economies had discussed various issues such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.
On his arrival in Glasgow, a large group of Indians living in Scotland welcomed him. During the summit, PM Modi will present India’s climate action agenda and what it plans to do to fight climate change. He will also meet a group of important people from the Indian community when he is there.
Today, he will attend the opening ceremony of the World Leaders’ Summit of the COP26 climate summit. Later, he will also have a meeting with the COP26 host, British PM Boris Johnson.
The COP26 climate summit
As we read earlier, COP26 is extremely important as climate change has become a life-threatening global emergency. So, leaders at COP26 will need to agree on many important goals.
Britain is naming a glacier in Antarctica the Glasgow Glacier to mark Glasgow’s hosting of the COP26 climate summit. They are also naming eight other nearby glaciers after cities where important climate reports were issued, or policies were agreed upon.
You can watch the opening ceremony of the COP26 climate summit at 5:30 PM IST on Youtube.
