World Ozone Day – 16 September

World Ozone Day – 16 SeptemberEvery year, on 16 September, we observe World Ozone Day. It is also called the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

World Ozone Day aims to spread awareness about the ozone layer and the importance of protecting it.

The ozone layer or ozone shield is a layer of gas surrounding the Earth that absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation protecting us from harmful rays.
 	However, scientists discovered that harmful chemicals released by factories were depleting (lessening) the ozone layer.
 	So, on 26 August 1987, nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to protect the ozone layer. The agreement came into force on 16 September 1989.
 	In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated this day in remembrance of the above agreement.

This year's theme is 32 Years and Healing.

It celebrates over three decades of international cooperation to protect the ozone layer and the climate under the Montreal Protocol.
