World Tuberculosis Day, 24 March

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organisations commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on 24 March.

  • This day is observed to raise public awareness about the negative effects of Tuberculosis (TB) on health and society.
  • It also aims to raise awareness of efforts to end the spread of TB around the world.
  • 24 March marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this disease.

What is the theme of World TB Day 2022?

  • The theme of World TB Day 2020 is “Invest to End TB. Save Lives”
  • It focuses on the urgency to act on the commitments made by global leaders to stop TB.
  • This includes increasing facilities to prevent and treat the disease, end discrimination of TB patients and ensure sufficient funds for research of the disease.

What is Tuberculosis (TB)?

  • It is an infectious disease usually caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria.
  • TB generally affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body.
  • Symptoms of TB include cough, weight loss, night sweats and fever.
  • It is preventable and curable but requires a long course of treatment. Worldwide, TB is one of the top 10 causes of death.

Do check out this Youtube video shared by the World Health Organisation. In the video, 19 years old, Joeseph Jim shares her story of living with TB.
