World Turtle Day – 23 May

Happy World Turtle Day!

The day aims to celebrate and bring attention to the turtles and tortoises of the world. It encourages people to create more awareness so that they can stay safe.

Today, many turtles and tortoises are in very few numbers. They have become less due to pollution, hunting and loss of homes where they live. So, it is important that we keep them safe.

World Turtle Day is celebrated in many ways. Some even people dress like turtles to encourage public awareness.

This day has been celebrated since 2000, led by an organisation named the American Tortoise Rescue.

On this day, here are some fun facts about turtles and tortoises

Tortoises are also turtles. It’s just that they live on land. This makes them different from other turtles, which live in the sea.

A Galapagos giant tortoise named Jonathan is the world’s oldest land animal.

Turtles love to eat jellyfish. But some jellyfish are poisonous, so they have to be careful.

What is the largest turtle and the largest tortoise in the world?

The largest turtle is the leatherback sea turtle, while the biggest tortoise in the world is the Galapagos giant tortoise.
