You can visit the underground of Rome’s ColosseumWe have earlier read about the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. It is a giant amphitheatre (open theatre) built of stone. The Roman emperor Vespasian built the Colosseum. It is almost 2000 years old and is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built.

The Colosseum could hold tens of thousands of spectators who came to see gladiator fights and other performances. Today, it is a very famous place which gets millions of tourists every year.

For the first time in its history, the underground of Rome's Colosseum is open to the public. These underground levels, or "hypogea," were where gladiators (professional fighters) and animals waited before entering the theatre for fights.
The hypogea
Now, tourists can visit the hypogea and see what it was like. In ancient times, since it was dark underground, there were candles burning inside. But now, the upper levels are not there anymore and sunlight shines into it.

Seeing the hypogea will help visitors and experts better understand how the Colosseum operated.

Over the past 10 years, archaeologists, engineers and architects have worked to make the Colosseum look similar to how used to in the past.
