Indian Air Force’s all-women pilot crew creates history

For the first time ever, an all-women Indian Air Force (IAF) crew flew a Mi-17 V5 helicopter for a Battle Inoculation Training* mission.

It happened at a forward air base* in South Western air command.
 	This is the first time that an all-women crew has flown a medium-lift* helicopter.
 	The crew comprised of

Flight Lieutenant Parul Bhardwaj (Captain), 
 	Flying Officer Aman Nidhi (co-pilot) and 
 	Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal (flight engineer).

Squadron leader Richa Adhikari, the unit engineering officer, gave certification for the flight.

The pilots had undergone basic flight training at the Helicopter Training School at Air Force Station, Hakimpet followed by advanced training at Air Force Station, Yelahanka.

Last week, Flt Lt. Bhawana Kanth became the first woman to qualify for IAF combat missions.

Recently, a Sikh girl also became the first to join the Royal Australian Air Force.

*Forward base - A military base used as front area near the border, for launching assaults or providing support to larger stations.

*Medium-lift - "Medium-lift" are helicopters that weigh about about 6350 kg to 20400 kg.

*Battle Inoculation Training: Getting ready for battle like situations.
