Saniya Mistri – Gully Girl!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Saniya Mistri, an 11th-grade student, has been rapping for three years and hasn’t stopped. Her father is a rickshaw puller and her mother is a multi-tasker to make ends meet. Regardless of one’s socioeconomic situation or background, a true genius may thrive in any environment.

Growing up in Mumbai!

Saniya Mistri, a 15-year-old girl growing up in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, often wondered why her life was so different from the lives of those who lived in the city’s glitzy, wealthy neighbourhoods.

She began writing poetry at a young age and has continued to this day. Soon after, she was introduced to the art of rapping by her friends. They also assist her in the recording and shooting of the songs.

Not giving up on her dreams!

Despite her family’s money problems, her inventiveness was still clear. She doesn’t even have a cell phone, so she asks her friends to help her record her verses. This is where Saniya, a rapper who goes by the stage name Saniya MQ, was born and raised.

Saniya has a strong desire to draw attention to the plights of people who live in poverty. As well as her own situation, this makes her story stands out.

A Youtube Sensation!

Saniya has her own YouTube account where she posts her music videos. With only a few thousand followers, the young rapper is still relatively new. It’s been amazing to see her stay focussed in the face of challenges.

Saniya has about 10,000 subscribers on YouTube right now. One of her songs about frustration and anger at systemic inequalities is getting a lot of attention.

Her parents were unaware of her rapping abilities and growing music career. Her mother, though, was said to be pleased when she saw Saniya perform in public for the first time.’
