Twitter improves accessibility!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Twitter added two new features that will let users see more information about images on the site. ALT badges and picture descriptions are the terms used to describe these features.

ALT badges and image descriptions assist technology in better understanding an image. People who use these features could facilitate a better understanding of the parts of an image, like what they are and how they work.

Uses of ALT Badges and Image Descriptions!

If one is visually impaired, has low vision, uses accessibility technology, lives in a place with low bandwidth, or wants more information, the ALT badge and image description features could come in handy.

In order to make an image more visible, one could add an image description. At the same time, one could remove an image from forums where it isn’t required or could potentially be misused. Images also come in handy for a lot of news media and fact-checking organisations.

The description of each image is generated by the user, thus it must be entered manually for each image that is posted. It’s also possible to use Twitter’s guide to add alt text to images. Images that have been retweeted can also have captions added.

“A black rectangle with white letters A L T, spelling ALT, will show on images with an image description,” is how the ALT badge will be depicted.
