New planet AB Aurigae offers clues about planet formation

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

We thought that we know how the planets form as we have seen the formation of our Solar system.

A new planet is forming 500 light-years away

In recent research, the researchers have spotted a hot, Jupiter like planet in formation. This planet is forming around a star that is about 500 light-years away from Earth.

The little baby planet is still in formation, drawing down matter from a vast disk of dust and gas and it swirls around its infant sun. It has left astronomers for years.

Scientists have started enquiring about the origins of Earth and the other planets of the Solar system began in the mid-1700s.

Studying the process of planet formation

We can make a replica of our Solar system on the computer. The interesting part is that all the planets will be arranged in the right order and in the right order. This model will help the astronomers in studying the planets in detail.

The first system of planets orbiting distant stars was discovered in mid-1990s. The new planets didn’t fit the replica of the solar system. You can say that the planet formation chooses different paths.

New planet spotted

Scientists have spotted a planet around a star that is 500 light-years away from Earth. This star is named AB Aurigae.  It has become famous for the beautiful, spiral disk that surrounds the planet.

This planet is 93 times far from its star as Earth is from the Sun. It provides strong evidence for the theory of gravitational collapse.

The new planet was discovered using Subaru Telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This planet is hot around 2000 degrees celsius due to the violent and rapid formation process. The swirling gas and dust around the planet are illuminated by the blueish light of AB Aurigae’s central star.
