Kabul – An underground book club kindles hope!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

In Kabul, a group of Afghan students has formed an underground book club to learn, read, and write their own stories in the face of increasing Taliban restrictions.

Who are the Taliban?

The Taliban is an Islamic religious organisation that is known for its ruthlessess and cruelty.

Since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan, a neighbourhood in the western part of Kabul has been the target of constant attacks. After US troops left Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban took back control. This caused the Afghan government to fall apart. Students at a high school in Kabul are part of an underground book club. This is done to get around the Taliban’s ban on girls going to school.

Educating oneself during times of war!

  • Students get together to read, learn, and even write their own stories. In this book club are learning how important it is to tell stories and learn on their own.
  • One of the club’s leaders believes that the girls are the smartest, but they need to be polished. Last year, a club member lost 12 of her classmates in an explosion at Sayed ul-Shuhada High School. Among them was her best friend.
  • Although the Taliban’s limitations have been reinstated, Tahira and the other 29 students at Sayed ul-Shuhada High School are determined to continue their studies despite the ongoing attacks.

Learning to kindle hope and positivity!

  • Setting up a book club is risky in a time when women are getting less freedom. The girls in the book club know there are risks, but they are not afraid because they want to learn.
  • It is through participation in an underground book club that they have found a method to overcome the Taliban’s restrictions on girls’ education.
  • Students come together to learn, read, and even compose stories of their own.
  • Although they do it in secrecy, the book club’s leaders teach the importance of storytelling to their members.
