Climate change impacting fishermen!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Along the western coast of India, fishermen and people who sell seafood are losing their jobs because the water is getting warmer. Because of this climate change, fishermen are having to make do with a smaller catch.

The average surface temperature of the Indian Ocean rose by 1 degree Celsius between 1951 and 2015, at a rate of 0.15 degrees Celsius per decade, according to a report from India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Key facts about climate change!

  • As the water temperature goes up, fish will look for new places to live. Coral reefs are great places for fish to live. But the corals are dying because of the changes in temperature.
  • The rise in temperature also affects the ability of fish to have babies. As the temperature gets warmer, the chemicals in the ocean water change. Thus this makes it hard for the fish to reproduce, which hurts the fish population.
  • The heat also kills phytoplankton, which gives fish the food they need to stay alive.
  • The rise in sea temperatures directly affects the jobs of fish sellers, especially women, who are the backbone of this industry.
  • The decrease in catches makes it harder for the local fishermen to make enough money to live on.
  • As per experts one of the most important food sources in the coastal area is in danger because fish populations are going down.
