Malaysia crowns Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah as new king

Malaysia crowns Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah as new kingMalaysia crowned its 16th king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah on 30th July 2019.

The previous king, Sultan Muhammad V, stepped down in January 2019.

Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the coronation (the crowning ceremony).
 	Sultan Abdullah called for national unity in his first speech as the King.
 	He is well-known for his love of sports.

The role of the King of Malaysia

The King of Malaysia is known as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, or 'He Who Is Made Lord'.
 	He is the ceremonial (nominal) head of the government and armed forces of Malaysia.
 	The king is also highly respected as the guardian of Islam and Malay tradition.

How is Malaysia's system of kingship different?

Malaysia has a unique kingship system, which is not found anywhere else in the world.
 	Nine ethnic Malay state rulers take turns as the King. They are the king for a period of five years.
 	This system has been maintained since Malaysia's independence from Britain in 1957.
