Andaman Islands honor soldiers!

In the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, more than twenty islands are named after distinguished soldiers. These soldiers were recipients of the Param Vir Chakra.
The Param Vir Chakra is the country’s highest honour for bravery during a war.
Government officials say that giving uninhabited islands the names of Param Vir Chakra heroes is a way to honour the soldiers who gave up their lives for our future.
The Andaman Islands, and especially the Cellular Jail, had a big effect on how our long-running fight for independence went. Furthermore, some of the most well-known freedom fighters were locked up in the Cellular Jail.
Key facts!
- There are 21 islands in total.
- Sixteen are in the North and Middle Andaman district, and five are in the South Andaman district.
- Some of the 21 islands are protected forests, and others are great for fishing, water sports, and tourism.
- The government also gave schoolchildren books with information about famous soldiers.
- This was done so that the kids could learn more about what the soldiers did to protect our country.
- According to experts, Andaman and Nicobar Island are also regarded as a ‘tirtha sthan’ (pilgrimage).
- Because of the sacrifices made by the freedom warriors, and now such honour for the winners of the Param Vir Chakra is a matter of pride for us.
- Some of the notable soldiers are:
- Major Somnath Sharma – The first uninhabited island in the North and Middle Andamans will be referred to as Somnath Dweep.
- On November 3, 1947, Major Sharma was dealing with Pakistani infiltrators close to Srinagar Airport, Sharma gave his life in the line of duty and was killed.
- Subedar and Honorary Captain Karam Singh – An island named “Karam Singh Dweep” in his honour.
- He fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
- Major Somnath Sharma – The first uninhabited island in the North and Middle Andamans will be referred to as Somnath Dweep.
