Bomb Cyclone freezes North America!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

A historic “bomb cyclone” causes widespread freezing across North America. This once-in-a-generation type event” has the potential to turn deadly and is already breaking cold-weather records.

Some parts of Canada have temperatures falling to minus 50 degrees Celsius and in the United States, some states are witnessing temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius.

What is a bomb cyclone?

The cause of a sudden drop in temperature of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours is called a “bomb cyclone.”

What is a millibar?

A millibar refers to atmospheric pressure when talking about the weather.

As per weather experts, even subtropical northern Florida is experiencing snowfall at this point.

Key facts!

  • According to climate experts, a bomb cyclone takes place when warm air collides with cold air.
  • This bomb cyclone was caused when the air from the Arctic collided with tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico.
  • This resulted in the formation of a depression that brought rain and snow.
  • According to the meteorologist, the rapid decrease in pressure that occurred during this storm is what makes it so unique.
  • The pressure dropped by 40 millibars in just one day.
  • Furthermore, weather experts believe that the reason why this storm is so unprecedented is because of the severity and extreme of the low temperatures it has brought.
  • The National Weather Service in the United States issued a frostbite warning.
  • In addition to hypothermia and even death.
  • According to the news reports, the bomb cyclone renders all forms of transport “hazardous” and in some cases even “impossible.”
  • However, experts state that when the air from the Arctic moves across the country, it will gradually warm up.
