USA Back in UNESCO: High-Five for Diplomacy!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there! Guess what? Some exciting news is buzzing around the United States and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Let me break it down for you in a fun and easy way!

So, there was a bit of a disagreement between the U.S. and UNESCO a while back. You see, UNESCO decided to include Palestine as a member, which made the U.S. and Israel stop funding the organization. But guess what? The U.S. is ready to make amends!

The U.S. officials noticed that China was becoming quite influential in UNESCO’s decision-making process. They wanted to be a part of it too! So, the Biden administration asked for $150 million to pay off the dues they owed to UNESCO and rejoin the organization. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, we’re back, and we want to be part of the cool stuff happening!”

US Rejoins: UNESCO Revival!

  • When the UNESCO Director General, Audrey Azoulay, shared this exciting news with ambassadors from different countries, everyone clapped and cheered. It was like a big celebration! The U.S. used to be the biggest funder of UNESCO, so this is a big deal. Now, all the member countries will vote on whether to welcome the U.S. back. But it looks like they’re really happy about it!
  • By returning and paying their dues, the U.S. will provide a significant financial boost to UNESCO. They support fantastic projects like preserving cultural heritage, fighting climate change, and helping girls learn to read. It’s like the U.S. is giving a thumbs up to these important causes.
  • The U.S. had some concerns about UNESCO in the past, but now they see that UNESCO has made efforts to improve things. Ms. Azoulay, the Director General, worked hard to address those concerns and build friendships among diplomats from Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. She even met with Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. to explain how things have changed. That way, everyone can agree and work together, no matter who becomes the president next year.
  • The U.S. has a plan to pay off their dues gradually over a few years, and they’ve already set aside money for important things like Holocaust education and technology education in Africa. The U.S. believes that UNESCO plays a vital role in shaping standards for technology and science education worldwide. They don’t want to miss out on the action and want to compete with other countries like China in a fair way.
  • The return of the U.S. to UNESCO brings hope for bigger and better things. People are excited about regulating artificial intelligence, educating girls in Afghanistan, and documenting the history of slavery in the Caribbean. They even said that if Israel wants to rejoin, they would be welcomed back too.
  • This isn’t the first time the U.S. has left and rejoined UNESCO. They did it back in the ’80s too because they thought the organization wasn’t being managed well. But in 2003, they realized the value of working together and decided to come back.
  • So, that’s the scoop, dear readers! The U.S. is rejoining UNESCO to be a part of important global initiatives and have a say in shaping the future. It’s all about friendship, learning, and making the world a better place. Isn’t that cool?
