We must have all heard about Mother Teresa, who is renowned for her charity and help towards the poor and needy. As her birth anniversary is coming up on 26 August, let’s take this time to learn something about her.

Who is a nun?

A nun is a member of a female religious group that lives in a place called a convent.

Key facts about Mother Teresa!

  • Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, North Macedonia, on 26 August 1910. When she was 18 years old, she became a Catholic nun and came to India.
  • After teaching for a few years at St. Mary’s High School in Kolkata, she started to work in the slums of Kolkata. Then, in 1950, Mother Teresa started the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. Its aim was to love and care for those who have nobody to look after them.
  • Leading by Example - Mother Teresa! Now, the Missionaries of Charity have spread all over the world. They provide help to the needy, refugees and victims of natural disasters like floods, epidemics, etc.

Nobel Prize

  • Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised throughout the world. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award) in 1980, among others.
  • Mother Teresa passed away on 5th September 1997 at the age of 87. But she is still remembered for all her good work. The Catholic Church named her Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.
