M. S. Subbulakshmi – The Flawless SingerMadurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (M. S. Subbulakshmi) was a legendary Carnatic* vocalist (singer) who was known for her lovely and magical voice.

Who was M. S. Subbulakshmi? Let’s learn a little about her today

M. S. Subbulakshmi was born on 16th September 1916 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
 	She was a leading proponent (supporter) of Indian classical and semi-classical music and a pioneer (leader) for women empowerment. 
 	Ms Subbulakshmi was the first Indian to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, in 1974.
 	In 1998, she also became the first musician to win the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award).
 	Over the years, she received many other awards including the Indira Gandhi Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, etc.
 	Some of her most famous works include ‘Suprabhatam’ (Early Morning Hymns), ‘Bhajagovindam’,  ‘Kurai OnrumIllai’ (composed by Rajagopalachari), and more.
 	Apart from classical music, Ms Subbulakshmi also sang songs for films like Sevasadanam, Meera, Meerabai, etc.

Ms Subbulakshmi passed away in 2004 but her musical legacy remains.

*Carnatic: It is a system of music commonly associated with southern India, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Sri Lanka also has this kind of music.
