Elderly woman selling idli for 1 Rupee gets reward

Recommended for Foundational Grades

An elderly lady from Tamil Nadu is in the news for selling idli ( a south Indian food item) for as less as 1 Rupee.

  • She is 82-year-old M Kamalathal from Coimbatore.
  • Kamalathal has been running her eatery for 30-35 years now.
  • Many poor labourers depend on her for their daily breakfast.
  • They get idlis for just one rupee per piece, along with homemade sambhar and chutney.
  • Ms Kamalathal wakes up every day before sunrise to open her home to the needy people and feed them breakfast.
  • It is not profits but serving people that drives her to work  – even at this age!

She became famous on social media after Anand Mahindra (Mahindra Group Chairman ) tweeted a video showing her preparing idlis in her humble home.

Soon after the government stepped in to issue her an LPG connection in honour of her service and hard work.

Her life is a lesson in service and hard work!
