  • Welwitschia consists of two leaves, a stem base and roots.
  • Its two permanent leaves are unique in the plant kingdom. They continue to grow and never shed.
  • The strap-shaped broad leaves lie on the ground and become like ribbons.
  • Welwitschia’s estimated lifespan is 400 to 1500 years, and it grows annually during the summer months.
  • It grows in isolated communities in the Namib Desert, Africa.

History of Welwitschia

  • It was discovered by the Austrian botanist and medical doctor named Friedrich Welwitsch in 1859.
  • The plant was named after Friedrich in recognition of his successful botanical research.
