Subhash Chandra Bose – Leading by example
Recommended for Foundational Grades
Freedom fighter
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was a great freedom fighter whose actions motivated Indian youths to be active and come forward to fight for India’s independence. He was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha to a well-to-do family. He joined the Indian National Congress, to fight against the British and soon, proved himself to be a charismatic leader.
Different Mindset
However, his way of thinking was very different from Gandhiji’s, and he was asked to leave. Gandhiji followed the path of non-violence, but young Subhash wanted to raise an army to fight for freedom.
The British put him under house arrest, but he managed to escape to Germany and then South-East Asia. There, he raised the Azad Hind Fauj ( Indian National Army). During the 1940s, Gandhi and Bose were the 2 leading pillars of India’s freedom struggle against the British. Subhash Chandra Bose was also a believer in women’s equality. He built an all-women unit in his army, the Rani of Jhansi regiment. In spite of their different ideologies, Gandhiji and Nehru retained their admiration for Subhash Chandra Bose. Gandhiji called Bose “The Prince among the patriots” and one whose “patriotism was second to none.”
