Leading by example – Rani Lakshmi Bai

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Rani Lakshmi Bai was the brave queen of the princely state of Jhansi.

Popularly known as ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’, she was one of the gallant leaders who led India’s first struggle for independence in 1857.

Rani Lakshmi Bai was born on 19 November 1828. Her original name was Manikarnika. From her childhood, she was trained in martial arts, sword fighting and horse riding.

Later, she was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao, the King of Jhansi in 1842. But after the death of Raja Gangadhar Rao, the British conquered the kingdom of Jhansi.

So, in order to save Jhansi, Rani Lakshmi Bai launched a war against the British. She gathered her forces and joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She led a fierce battle against the British, but died on 18 June 1858, in Gwalior.

Rani Lakshmi Bai is considered a symbol of bravery, patriotism and honour. She is considered to be one of the heroes of the First Indian Independence movement.
