India Travel Diaries – Rann of Kutch!

Rann of Kutch is in the Thar Desert in Gujarat, India. It is famous for its white sands and is one of the largest salt deserts in the world. The minerals and salts that are left behind after evaporation from a salt desert. The minerals reflect the sunlight and so appear as white.

  • The Rann of Kutch covers an area of 7500 sq. km. It is also one of the hottest areas of India where temperatures in summer touch 50 degrees Celsius. But it also gets extremely cold during winter and temperatures can go below zero degrees too.
  • Many different animals and birds live in this region and there are many wildlife sanctuaries and protected reserves here. Some of these are the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary and Kutch Bustard Sanctuary.

  • The northern boundary of the Greater Rann of Kutch also forms the International Border with Pakistan
  • People living here are called Kutchi. The women and young girls are very skilled in embroidery work. The Kutch handicraft is famous for bead and mirror work in cloth embroidery.
  • The Government of Gujarat hosts the ‘Rann Utsav’ every year in December for 3 months. There are dancers, artists, camel shows and handicraft stalls set up during the Utsav.

Many people attend the Utsav and also visit the Rann of Kutch to see the beautiful desert, meet the talented locals and enjoy the wildlife.
