World Meteorological Day, 23 March

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Did you know, the study of weather is called meteorology and a person who studies it is called a meteorologist? On that note, we celebrate World Meteorological Day (WMD) on 23 March every year. We celebrate this day to highlight the important contributions of the WMO as well as every country’s meteorological agencies to the safety and well-being of society.

  • This day marks the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 23 March 1950.
  • The theme for WMD 2022 is “Early Warning and Early Action”.
  • World Meteorological Day often features various events such as conferences and exhibitions for meteorological professionals as well as the general public.

Extreme Climates!

There are more extremes in the world because of changes in the climate. This means that weather, climate, and water are getting more extreme. As the population grows, cities become denser, and the environment gets more polluted, more and more of us are exposed to a wide wide range of risks that are all related.

Impact based weather forecasts!

There are no longer enough forecasts of what the weather will be to be enough. If one wants to save lives and businesses, one needs to have impact-based forecasts that tell people what the weather will do. One in three people still doesn’t have enough early warning systems to protect them.

National weather and climate services, emergency management authorities, and development agencies all need to work together more to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
